10DLC guides

What happens if you text customers without registering?

Your texts get blocked, usually quietly. Here is what that looks like, how to tell it is happening to you, and the fastest way to get sending again.

Your messages don't arrive

Providers now block business texts from unregistered local numbers before they reach the carrier. The customer never sees the message. Nothing bounces back to your phone. Your software might even show the text as sent.

How to tell it's happening

  • Customers say they never got your reminders
  • No-shows go up for no obvious reason
  • Replies to your texts drop to zero
  • Your provider's message log shows failed or undelivered messages, often with an unregistered-number error
  • Your texting app shows a banner asking you to finish registration

On Twilio, the error is 30034, "US A2P 10DLC - Message from an Unregistered Number." Other providers use their own codes for the same thing.

Pending isn't approved

If your registration is submitted but still pending, your number counts as unregistered until the campaign is approved and the number is attached to it. Don't plan a launch around the day you submit. Plan around approval.

Approval isn't permanent

An approved campaign can still be suspended. Carriers watch traffic. If you send texts outside your registered use case, get spam complaints, or text people who never opted in, they can filter or suspend the campaign. Stay inside what you registered.

How to get sending again

  • Register your brand and campaign through your provider, or finish the registration your app started
  • Attach your number to the approved campaign
  • While you wait, call customers with urgent appointments, or use email
  • Fix the opt-in, samples, and website before you submit, so you aren't also waiting through a rejection

The wait you can control

You can't speed up carrier review. You can avoid a rejection, which restarts the wait. Clear builds the registration and audits it against the known rejection reasons, so your first submission is the one that gets approved.

Common questions

Will I be fined for texting without 10DLC?

Unregistered texts get blocked, so they never reach anyone. Carriers can charge penalties for serious violations like prohibited content. Texting people without their consent is a separate legal risk under laws like the TCPA.

Can I text while my 10DLC registration is pending?

Usually not from that number. Providers block messages until the campaign is approved and the number is attached to it.

Why do my texts say sent but customers never get them?

If your number isn't registered, the text can be blocked after it leaves your app. Check your provider's message log for a failed status or an unregistered-number error.

Does registration fix deliverability completely?

It gets you through the door. After that, deliverability depends on staying inside your use case, honoring STOP, and avoiding spam-like content such as public link shorteners.
